According to the latest data, Zambia has reported a total of 16,446 cholera cases, with 626 fatalities, resulting in a distressing fatality rate of 3.9%. This rate is notably higher than the global average, exceeding the World Health Organization’s benchmark by nearly four times. The surge in cases, particularly between December 2023 and February 2024, indicates a rapid and alarming spread of the disease in the country. The expanse most severely affected by thepandemic is Lusaka. The pandemic has also heavily impacted neighbouring districts, including Chongwe.

In a commendable demonstration of corporate social responsibility, Oval Mining, Cooperlemon Consultancy, BIODOT medical supplies, Power Divine Missions, and Bushbaby Foundation generously donated materials to support the fight against cholera in Chongwe. The donation included over 500 bottles of chlorine, 100 bottles of Jik, sensitization material, sterile gloves, and facemasks distributed to Kanakantapa Health Center and EvergreenPrimary School.
Acting on behalf of the Chongwe District Health Office, the sister in Charge at Kanakantapa Health Center, Mrs Harriet Chabala expressed gratitude for the proactive approach taken by Oval Mining and partners in responding to the urgent need of the Ministry of Health in combating the pandemic. In her remarks, she emphasized for the need for other institutions in the area to uplift the community and share their success with the community especially that the clinic was facing many challenges. Furthermore, she emphasized the need for the community to work with the Ministry of Health to defeat the pandemic.
The donation was acknowledged by area councilor Mr. Kalima Kwenda and Mr. Mwakoi Sililo, the Director of Housing and Social Services at Chongwe Municipal Council. They expressed sincere appreciation for the donation, commending the partners for assisting the Kanatantapa community. They also recognized other corporate social responsibility initiatives being implemented in the area such as the construction of ablution blocks at Evergreen Primary School, the tree planting exercise, and the sponsorship of a school football team in the area.
The donation did not end there. The partners also donated 200 bottles of Chlorine, 50 bottles of Jik and various cleaning material to Evergreen Primary School in sight of governments
recent announcement of opening of all Primary and Secondary schools. Received by the District Education Standard Officer Mrs Lucy Chipeta Njobvu, she thanked the partners for the commitment to supporting the school. She also stated it was the desire of government to possess clean learning environments for all learners. Overall, this donation exemplified Oval Mining, Cooperlemon, Power Divine Missions, BIODOT medical supplies and Bushbaby Foundation’s commitment to making a positive
impact in the communities where they operate.
