Evergreen School, Oval Mining, Power Divine Missions, Bushbaby Foundation and The Kanakantapa Community

On the warm and sunny afternoon of December 24th, the school grounds of Evergreen School buzzed with excitement as children from Kanakantapa gathered for a special Christmas lunch event organized by Power Divine Mission, Bush baby Foundation, Cooperlemon Consultancy and Oval Mining. Laughter and chatter filled the air, creating a festive atmosphere that echoed the spirit of the Christmas season.

The focal point of the day was the eagerly anticipated lunch, but before the delicious aromas of food could take centre stage, the event kicked off with the introduction of a distinguished guest – the area councillor of Kanakantapa who graced the occasion as the guest of honour. With a warm smile, the councillor captivated the audience with inspiring words, emphasizing the importance of community and shared experiences. Among the dignitaries in attendance was Mr Phiri – the school head teacher, whose eyes beamed with pride, the Kanakantapa Area Police Command and the Kanakantapa Resettlement Scheme manager, who observed the proceedings with a watchful eye. Their presence added formality to the event, underscoring the significance of the event in fostering connections beyond the boundaries of the school.

The excitement reached a fever pitch as the first program unfolded – a spirited football match between Evergreen School girls team and the Kanakantapa community girls team. The girls, dressed in vibrant jerseys, showcased their skills and sportsmanship on the field. Cheers and applause erupted from the spectators, creating an electrifying atmosphere of friendly competition. The second game, another football showdown, featured Evergreen Primary School – boys team facing off against enthusiastic members of the Kanakantapa community. The match not only showcased the talents of the players but also exemplified the power of unity and collaboration across different groups within the community.

As the day drew towards midday, casting a warm glow over the playing field, the final game took centre stage – a thrilling netball match. The Evergreen School team, with determination in their eyes, engaged in a fast-paced competition with the equally passionate members of the Kanakantapa community. The court echoed with the sounds of quick footsteps, excited cheers, and the occasional burst of laughter. Throughout the games, the sense of companionship between the teams was profound. Beyond the competition, the event served as a catalyst for building stronger bonds between Evergreen School, Oval Mining, Power Divine Missions, Bush baby foundation and the Kanakantapa community, fostering a sense of togetherness that extended beyond the sports arena.

As the games concluded, the children, teachers, and community members gathered for a festive Christmas lunch. The aroma of home-cooked meals filled the air, and the shared joy of sharing a meal together summarised the true spirit of the holiday season – a celebration of unity, friendship, and the power of community. Following the lunch with the children, the subsequent segment involved the presentation of awards.

The community achieved success in two categories, securing awards for the girls netball team and the boys football team. Meanwhile, Evergreen’s girls football team earned recognition with a single award. Each victorious team received a substantial prize of K1500 along with a trophy. Runners-up were not left empty-handed, as they were awarded K500. The festivities wrapped up as Oval Mining, Power Divine Missions, and Bushbaby Foundation presented footballs and netball balls to Evergreen Primary School. They extended their congratulations to all the winners and encouraged them to contribute to development of the area through sport. The echoes of happiness and the cheers from the event left behind cherished memories of Christmas a day filled with warmth, love and connection.
