Introduction
In a recent Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, PCB Mining Limited undertook a conservation farming project to promote sustainable agriculture in Kansenseli Village, Mwinilunga. The program, which kicked off in September 2024, aims to empower local farmers through sustainable practices, reduce soil degradation, and enhance crop diversity for a more resilient agricultural future.
Understanding Conservation Agriculture (CA)
Conservation Agriculture (CA) is a transformative approach to farming that prioritizes resource efficiency. The goals of CA include:
- Minimizing soil disturbance: Preserving soil structure and fertility by reducing plowing and tilling.
- Maintaining a permanent soil cover: Protecting the soil with organic mulches or cover crops.
- Diversifying crops: Enhancing biodiversity and minimizing pest issues by rotating or intercropping.
- Managing water and biological resources: Utilizing water efficiently to support crop growth and maintain soil health.
A Collaborative Effort with FQM's Guidance
The project was conducted under the guidance of First Quantum Minerals Limited (FQM), a longstanding partner in CA initiatives, with experience dating back to 2016. Arriving in Mwinilunga on September 17, I met with FQM’s Mr. Maximillian Katanga on September 18. His extensive knowledge of CA, honed over years of involvement in similar projects, provided valuable insights into establishing a successful farming program in Kansenseli.
Engaging the Community: Village Leadership and Farmer Selection
On September 20, I met with the six headmen of Kansenseli Village to discuss the project’s goals, timelines, and benefits. Their enthusiastic response underscored the importance of local buy-in for sustainable agriculture projects. Following extensive discussions with Chief Chibwika on October 3, we finalized a group of 30 farmers—both men and women—who would participate in the project.
Securing Essential Resources
To equip farmers for the transition to CA, I gathered quotations for essential materials such as D-compound fertilizer, urea, maize seed, glyphosate, and Kolopa Super from suppliers in Mwinilunga, Solwezi, and Lusaka. By October 24, all materials were purchased and ready for distribution. The official handover, held on October 25, was a community event attended by local representatives and village leaders, symbolizing the collaborative spirit behind the initiative.
Training and Transformation: FQM Joins to Educate Farmers
The hands-on training phase began on November 4, when two conservation farming trainers from FQM arrived to lead a three-day seminar for the farmers. These sessions allowed farmers to explore CA methods and correct past mistakes, offering a fresh perspective on farming.
Throughout the training, farmers were encouraged to share their experiences, ask questions, and adapt to CA practices. The interactive format brought the community and project team closer, creating an environment of learning, growth, and mutual respect.
Positive Community Impact and Lasting Benefits
The project not only introduced sustainable farming practices to Kansenseli Village but also fostered a strong sense of community and mutual support among the farmers. Sharing meals, laughter, and knowledge, we formed connections that went beyond the fields. This project is a testament to how agriculture can be a unifying force, bringing together people and promoting positive change for future generations.
A Model for Future Agricultural Initiatives in Zambia
The success of PCB Mining Limited’s conservation farming project in Kansenseli Village demonstrates the power of collaborative, sustainable agricultural initiatives. As more communities adopt CA principles, projects like this can pave the way for a more resilient, eco-friendly agricultural landscape across Zambia.
