Oval Mining Boosts Hygiene in Kanakantapa with New Sanitation Project

Chongwe, Zambia – In a significant step toward improving sanitation in rural Zambia, Oval Mining Limited has officially handed over a newly constructed ablution block to the Zambian Government at Kanakantapa Resettlement Scheme in Chongwe District. This community-driven sanitation project is set to benefit over 8,000 residents, improving access to clean facilities and promoting better hygiene practices.

Supporting Public Health and Community Wellbeing

Speaking at the official handover ceremony, Mr. Makungu, Director of Oval Mining Limited, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable community development.
He highlighted that Oval Mining’s corporate social responsibility initiatives are aligned with Zambia’s national development goals and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to clean water and sanitation (SDG 6).

Scope of the Sanitation Project

The project includes:

  • Construction of a new ablution block featuring two male and two female toilets.
  • Refurbishment of the maternity ward sanitation facilities at the local clinic.
  • Full repainting of the clinic’s exterior to enhance the health facility’s appearance and functionality.
  • Capacity-building through sanitation and maintenance training for both clinic staff and community members to ensure the long-term sustainability of the infrastructure.

Government Commendation and Stakeholder Support

Representing the Government of Zambia, Chongwe District Commissioner (DC) Mr. Evans Lupiya praised Oval Mining and the Chongwe Municipal Council for their collaborative approach.

He further acknowledged the technical expertise and resource support provided by Oval Mining throughout the planning and execution of the project, reaffirming the government’s commitment to working with private sector partners to improve public service delivery in rural areas.

Ongoing Commitment to Community Development

This latest initiative builds upon Oval Mining’s ongoing investment in infrastructure development in Kanakantapa. In 2023, the company installed a water reticulation system and constructed a 2×6 ablution block at Evergreen Primary School, addressing both hygiene and water access in the education sector.

Oval Mining is also in the planning stages of building a modern community school in the area, demonstrating its long-term vision to uplift education and health standards in Zambia’s underserved communities.
